Once I assembled, retactor top does not close flush with the black board piece it closes down to? Have I placed wood piece wrongly on retactor arms when I screwed the wood piece to retractors?

You may want to go over the directions again , if it does not close right it is an assembly issue, make sure the instructions were followed correctly
