The Free Shipping Myth
At AMB Furniture and Design, we believe in transparent pricing. We do not hide shipping costs inside our product prices and call it "free shipping." Here's why — and how other retailers use this tactic to make you think you're getting a deal.
Why We Don't Offer "Free Shipping"
Our local customers shop online and pick up at our warehouse in Southern California at no charge. We also offer low-cost local delivery throughout Southern CA. If we built shipping costs into our prices, local customers would be overcharged for a service they don't need. And since shipping costs vary greatly by state, including them in the base price would mean overcharging some customers while undercharging others.
We list shipping separately so you always know exactly what you're paying for the product — and exactly what you're paying for delivery.
How Retailers Hide Shipping Costs
1. Building Shipping Into the Product Price
The most common method: the retailer raises the product price to cover shipping, then advertises "Free Shipping." You don't actually save anything — and in some cases you pay more, because sales tax is calculated on the higher price.
Example: A sofa set priced at $2,000 with "free shipping" costs more in total than the same sofa set priced at $1,600 with $200 shipping. You pay sales tax on $2,000 vs. $1,600 — meaning you're taxed on the hidden shipping cost too.
2. "Standard" or Curbside Shipping
Some retailers offer free "standard" shipping, which means the item is dropped at the curb — you unload it yourself. If you want inside delivery, you pay an additional fee. Many customers pay the upgrade, which actually generates extra profit for the retailer beyond the original shipping cost.
3. Minimum Purchase Requirements
Some furniture retailers require a minimum order amount to qualify for free shipping. Since most furniture pieces already cost hundreds or thousands of dollars, this threshold is easy to meet — but the shipping cost has almost always been built into the product price to make it possible. You're not saving on shipping; you're simply paying for it upfront in the item price.
4. Limited Item Free Shipping
"Free shipping" promotions on furniture sites often apply only to select items — typically smaller accessories or accent pieces where freight costs are low. Large items like sofas, sectionals, bedroom sets, and dining tables always carry significant freight costs that are either charged separately or hidden in the price. There is no such thing as truly free freight shipping on large furniture.
A Real-World Example
Here's a direct comparison on a sofa set we carry:
- Wayfair: $3,000 with "FREE SHIPPING"
-
AMB Furniture: $1,600 for the same sofa set, with shipping calculated separately:
- Local warehouse pickup: Free
- Local delivery in Southern CA: $40–$130
- Shipping to other states: $240–$440
- Maximum total: $2,040 — still nearly $1,000 less than Wayfair's "free shipping" price
Our Commitment to Honest Pricing
AMB Furniture and Design lists shipping separately from the product price because we want you to see the true cost of what you're buying. We don't treat shipping as a profit center — our goal is simply to break even on freight. We're in the furniture business, not the freight business.
